{"id":1140,"date":"2022-01-31T10:23:31","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T08:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ege-windturbines.com\/en\/?p=1140"},"modified":"2022-01-31T10:24:02","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T08:24:02","slug":"south-korean-firm-doosan-heavy-installs-8mw-offshore-wind-turbine-prototype","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ege-windturbines.com\/en\/2022\/01\/31\/south-korean-firm-doosan-heavy-installs-8mw-offshore-wind-turbine-prototype\/","title":{"rendered":"South Korean Firm Doosan Heavy installs 8MW Offshore Wind Turbine Prototype"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.6.6&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<section id=\"articleHead\">\n<header>\n<p class=\"summary\">Doosan Heavy plans to make its new 8MW offshore wind turbine commercially available by the summer<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"articleWrap\">\n<div id=\"articleFull\">\n<div id=\"articleMain\">\n<p>South Korean engineering firm Doosan Heavy Industries &amp; Construction has installed an 8MW offshore wind turbine at a test centre in the south-east of the country.<\/p>\n<p>It installed the prototype at the Korea Wind Power Demonstration Centre in Baeksu in South Jeolla province, and plans to commission it by the end of January.<\/p>\n<p>The company will then look to obtain international certification for the wind turbine and make final preparations to commercialise it by June.<\/p>\n<p>The direct-drive turbine features 100-metre long blades, a hub height of 130 metres, tip height of 232.5 metres, and can produce up to 8MW in wind speeds of 11m\/s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Doosan added that it also has a capacity factor of at least 30% in average wind speeds of 6.5m\/s.<\/p>\n<p>It is designed to withstand typhoons that occur off South Korea, Doosan Heavy power services business unit CEO Hongook Park said.<\/p>\n<p>The firm claimed that its direct-drive generator gives it higher structural stability and energy efficiency due to its simplified power transmission system and lower maintenance costs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"advertCentre\">\n<div id=\"c501Ad\" class=\"commercialSlot\" data-location-code=\"C\" data-sizes=\"300x250\" data-google-query-id=\"CP-K0KXH2_UCFfCH_QcdvCkFIw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/5748\/wpw.main\/page\/news\/article_5__container__\"><iframe id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/5748\/wpw.main\/page\/news\/article_5\" tabindex=\"0\" title=\"3rd party ad content\" role=\"region\" name=\"google_ads_iframe_\/5748\/wpw.main\/page\/news\/article_5\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"Advertisement\" data-google-container-id=\"6\" data-load-complete=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It developed the new 8MW turbine through a collaboration between industry and academia, led by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (Ketep), which launched in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>the company aims to work with local wind power companies to increase the local manufacturing footprint of the turbine, Park added.<\/p>\n<p>The engineering firm has previously offered 3MW and 5.5MW offshore wind turbines, so the 8MW marks a noticeable leap in power rating.
